paris, texas

django reinhart is the kind of musician who successfully evokes a mood, a time, an era and all with a sense of humour

underappreciated and inclined to take that itself in bad part, django would have been a tough interview... but he was brilliant

and i should own a lot more of his stuff, especially something on cd or mp3.

all i have is vinyl. and vinyl requires effort.

for playing cd's i think i'd like this

the pioneer cmx-3000, but in a home version, maybe even with a bit of wood-pannelling... mmm

in the meantime, here's django

young and beautiful

foals

new discovery from listening to a show on triple r this afternoon (around 3:45pm)

the lass on air played olympic airways

i know when i like a song because the volume goes up a bit, then more then a bit more

so who and what are 'foals'? i wondered

well, wikipedia tells me...

oh! oxford, english popsters, then

probably very young. they sound young.

and.. yep, singer yannis philippakis is an 80s baby.

i'll be happiness itself if the song is on youtube with a pretty, possibly animated video promo...

woo hoo!

enjoy!

making a mix

to tell someone some stuff

balance. hitting the right tone between sentiment and reality, because songs can do both so well.

i think maybe most songs tend towards sentiment, because it's the easier of the two.

reality doesn't always rhyme, and the truth isn't always pretty.

but, despite his genius for it, i haven't used any seBADoh/lou barlow on this one.

my friend who i 'm making the mix for actually knows me very well. he'll know if i'm using a track as a shortcut, but i hope he will also, for the same reason, know when i'm being ironic.

this isn't just a playlist, it's a letter, starting and middling and ending.

it's kind of broken into acts

from bright eyes through to snow patrol's run

the books for a palate cleanser, then into that brilliant 'i am missing you' song, 'roll up your sleeves'

onward and getting later now, and if he listens all in one go he'll need cheering up maybe, so pour another one to 'you can't win' by heavy trash, that'll sort you out

because we've still got some thinking to do, to the pastels, and julie doiron

leaving you with a song to help you sleep, a george winston

winston is almost too sentimental for me, but like with arvo part, it's the simplicity that makes it so emotive.

because i want to give him a gift not ruin his day.

:)

and it goes with my love,

the way things work

is subject to change

i watched my 19 month old try to put a cd into the side of a clock radio, like she's seen mummy do putting a cd into the side of our imac, and realised, how they do change.

this week i went to see the books.

the books!

i almost didn't know about their two melbourne concerts in time to get a ticket, but i did and i went and they were wonderful.

do you hear me? you guys were wonderful. such different looking people, the two of you. how did you happen to meet?
