heard something amazing on skullcave (fridays, triple r, drivetime)
it was by a guy who has been in godflesh, amongst other things, and releases solo music under the moniker of jesu
it was from an ep called opiate sun
the title track, was what i heard
i kept turning it up and up and up on my little ford's car stereo
reviewed here, on pitchfork, in august of this year
released on a label with the rather beautiful name of caldo verde "a popular soup of Portuguese and Brazilian cuisine" :)
which i think would be an excellent partner to the music written by ramin djawadi, the iranian-german soundtrack composer's work for iron man
and two things i would strongly consider buying
to have and to hold
forever

show me the way to go home
i found a little musical cot toy that plays 'show me the way to go home'
i love that they made a soothing toy out of a drinking song :)
and it always makes me think of jaws...
courtesy of wikipedia: "The three shark-hunting protagonists of the 1975 film Jaws, Brody, Hooper and Quint, sing this song while waiting during the night on their small boat."
i'm pretty sure that's where i first heard it, and it's stuck in my head ever since
and someone's kindly popped that scene up on youtube (embedding sadly disabled)

from la roux to sir neville
got a bit of a night off last night, and attended the marriner festival at the melbourne recital centre.
what. an. amazing. venue.
i wished i could have heard sigur ros there instead of at the palais...
anyway, i was running a little bit late, got a taxi to the mrc. in the cab the radio was playing la roux 'bulletproof'. that's still filed under 'catchy and fun' in my mind, even though i'm not sure what i think of it musically. the driver turned it up for me, which was nice of him.
i made it to mrc with seconds to spare and just missed being locked out for the first work, which was a beautiful ralph "the lark ascending" vaughan williams. i love vaughan williams, like the good little popularist i think i secretly am, and this piece - Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis - was really quite quite lovely. cinematic and romantic. got me wondering if john powell (my new favourite film composer, since his stunning incidentals for hancock) was a vaughan williams fan.
the mco, formerly australia pro arte, are coming along nicely and looking to "fill the gap" of chamber concerts in melbourne. first violin and artistic director bill hennessy is quite delightful on stage, a real character, and i like that. (their website is aggressively orange though, so do be warned if you venture a click).
i also got to meet guest soloist, clarinettist andrew marriner and his mother, lady marriner, and all told it was a well-spent evening. lady marriner is now on my list of people i'd like to grow up to be like. beautiful, gracious, and kind.
the douglas weiland 9/11-referencing premiere was interesting, though not entirely to my tastes, but i do enjoy a premiere and clapped good and loud for it anyway.
the walton they finished with was excellent and i'm now adding english romantics to my list of favourite genres, along with french impressionists, russian ballets and post rock :)
it was so refreshing to sit in a beautifully designed acoustic space and hear gorgeous music played by world-class performers. i really should try to do it more often.
my thanks must go to the mco for the invitation and to the taxi driver, for cranking la roux

something good
listening to cloudbusting, by kate bush from hounds of love
amazing track, beautifully sampled by utah saints and renamed 'something good'
hey - channel 31 got a temporary digital license!
woot
so, our long trip, what did we end up listening to?
i put on kings of convenience early, then we had beck, first presets album, an mbug mix
kyuss on the way back, a best of
and presets apocalypso
underground lovers
john lydon
my cousin who got married, why we went on a long drive, walked down the stairs/aisle to the notes of one of the shorter and more sparse versions of that lovely music by yann tiersen for amelie
i'm at home getting together a dj set for a friend's work christmas party :) it's a whole month away, but i want to have everything i might need
or at least a good three or four hours' worth
tangent - i've noticed a disproportionate number of apostrophe misuses lately.
it's a possessive. so the thing has to be possessing the next word in the sentence, usually.
so in a way they are the pizza's toppings, i suppose, but i don't think that's quite what you meant.
but it doesn't pluralise. that's just and extra 's' on the end, no extra '
i'm a word fascist, i know
twelve fold chain by the books is playing on my itunes now
they are magnificent
possibly, along with do make say think and amiina, one of my favourite contemporary groups
and the french love them, which is always a good sign :)
they remind me of miranda july too
i notice that after seven years, july's site (see? possessive. the site, of miranda july) - learning to love you more - is no longer accepting submissions. what an amazing project that has been. i wish i had got off my bum and contributed, but i always enjoyed what i found there
anyway, time for bed now
love

to pass the time
i wish i had a bit longer and time to really think about this task of compiling some mix cds to accompany myself, my bloke and our 18 month-old girl on a long drive.
i've thrown together about five new playlists, just ctrl+ clicking on whatever i know i'll not be sorry to hear at least once.
trans am, pavement, all my daggy singalong hit singles that i keep for djing and for housework soundtracking.
i see no harm in liking music that is easily digestable, as long as there's plenty of musical fibre in your diet.
so i've chucked in the odd penguin cafe orchestra, bit of satie, some rolfe kent and jon brion stuff... and plenty of the kind of music that the littlie likes shakin' and groovin' along to as well.
i like long drives. like driving. am looking forward to it, as long as i've got enough music
